The first of the two documents (Srebrenica witness statements July 1995) is a summary of debriefings of surviving members of the 28th Division armed column which carried out a military formation-style breakout from the enclave of Srebrenica to the nearest Sarajevo-controlled territory in Tuzla, about 60 kilometers away. Along the way, the column had numerous clashes with Serb forces, resulting in massive casualties which were legitimate under international law. The column left the enclave late in the evening on July 11, 1995, and its main body and separated elements were moving toward Tuzla during the following seven days, frequently encountering Serb ambushes. Both events, prisoner executions and combat with the column, were occurring simultaneously in virtually the same geographical space, but their respective legal character is distinct. The statement summaries, prepared by ICTY Prosecution, are recorded in Tribunal files as Document no. 00464515. The second document, July 1995 Srebrenica witness statements about 28th Division column casualties, lists specifically those statements from the first group where the scope of combat casualties is discussed by surviving direct observers.
