In July of 1995, when Serbian forces began their offensive in Eastern Bosnia, the 28th Division of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina was illegally stationed in the UN protected enclave of Srebrenica. As of July 5, 1995, before the offensive started, it had the strength of 5,037 officers and men. On July 28, 1995, ARBiH chief of staff, General Enver Hadžihasanović filed a report in which he stated that a total of 2,311 of those troops had safely reached territory under the control of Sarajevo authorities. In his evidence at the Krstić trial on April 6, 2001, Hadžihasanović stated that “one can claim for certainty that 2,628 members, both soldiers and commanding officers, members of the 28th Division, were killed” in the breakout from Srebrenica. When Hadžihasanović’s figures for 28th Division breakout casualties in mid-July and survivors later in July 1995 are combined, the total figure roughly corresponds to division strength at the beginning of July, according to available documents.
