Srebrenica is inextricably linked to the concept of “humanitarian intervention,” or Right to Protect, also known as R2P. Without reference to what is officially deemed to have occurred in Srebrenica, it is scarcely conceivable that the concept of “humanitarian intervention,” which stands wholly outside the confines of international law, would ever have been seriously considered or gained traction. The emotional slogan “Never again Srebrenica” has effectively suppressed observance of and regard for international law as it had hitherto defined relations between sovereign states. It has also served as an effective disguise for Western and NATO aggression against and destruction of non-conforming governments. With Srebrenica removed from the equation, such interventions would have been plainly seen and duly classified as what they actually were — acts of unalloyed aggression in furtherance of imperialist objectives.
George Szamuely’s essay “An Analysis of Humanitarian Intervention in Action” is an important contribution to a more adequate understanding of the misleadingly promoted concept of “humanitarian intervention” which is ultimately based on the received version of what in July 1995 is alleged to have occurred in Srebenica.
